The counterfeit problem in Nigeria
Industry estimates suggest that 60-80% of branded products sold in open markets and through unverified online channels in Nigeria are counterfeit. This includes phones (especially iPhones and Samsung flagships), cosmetics, perfumes, sneakers (Nike, Adidas), accessories (AirPods, chargers), and electronics.
Counterfeit products are not just inferior — they can be dangerous. Fake chargers cause battery fires. Fake cosmetics contain harmful chemicals. Fake medications can be fatal. The financial loss is also significant: paying ₦200,000 for a fake iPhone is much worse than buying a genuine ₦150,000 mid-range phone.
