Why so many fakes in Nigeria?
Several factors contribute to the prevalence of counterfeits in Nigeria: high demand for global brands, limited authorized retail presence for many brands, weak enforcement of intellectual property laws, and significant price gaps between authentic and counterfeit products.
Counterfeits are produced in volume (mostly imported from East Asia), distributed through informal markets and unverified online sellers, and sold to unsuspecting buyers. The industry is worth billions of Naira annually.
