Product Photography Guide

Photos make or break Nigerian online sales. Buyers can't touch your product, so photos must convince them. This guide shows you exactly what works.

Essential equipment (under ₦25,000)

Your phone is sufficient if it's recent. A ₦15,000 ring light dramatically improves indoor photos. A ₦8,000 plain white backdrop creates clean photos. That's it — no need for professional camera initially.

Lighting techniques

Natural daylight is best — set up near a large window in the morning or late afternoon (not midday harsh sun). For indoor shoots, place your ring light 45 degrees above and to one side, facing the product. Avoid direct overhead light (creates harsh shadows).

Photo angles checklist

Take 5+ photos per product: 1) Front straight-on at eye level. 2) 45-degree angle showing depth. 3) Side profile. 4) Back showing details. 5) Close-up of brand label/key feature. For clothing: add lifestyle shot showing the item being worn.

Background and styling

Plain white or solid pastel backgrounds are standard. For premium items, use textured backgrounds (wood, fabric) to add character. Avoid cluttered backgrounds — they distract from the product.

Editing your photos

Use free apps like Snapseed or Adobe Express. Brighten if needed, increase contrast slightly, and ensure colors are accurate (don't over-saturate). Keep it natural — buyers feel cheated when product looks different in person.

FAQ

Do I need professional camera?

No — modern phones (iPhone 12+, Samsung S20+, Pixel 5+) take excellent product photos. Lighting matters more than camera.

How long should each photo session take?

Plan 15 minutes per product for 5 quality angles. Batch similar products together to save setup time.
